A number of states in the US are experiencing severe tornado outbreaks, deaths and extensive damage.

Giving folks a place to check in and let us know they're okay.

Washington Post has a live blog of watches and warnings:

This is the latest post:

5:30 p.m. update: CNN Weather reports there are presently 22 active tornado warnings and 5 tornado watches, covering 5 states.

@Butrflynet,
I think they have said that here in the Birmingham, AL area we won't see anything until the hours of 8:00pm - 11:00pm. It has changed several times today.

@Butrflynet,
Am waiting to hear from Mysteryman and family on Facebook. They're southeast of the tornado area. Hopefully MM is not out on the road driving his truck.

@Butrflynet,
From WaPo blog:

Quote:
5:55 p.m. update: A mind-boggling number of tornado warnings continue, with a large concentration in central and eastern Kentucky into southern Ohio. As darkness approaches, the tornado danger grows due to difficulty in spotting them (and verifying those seen on radar).

Here is a frightening image of the tornado that destroyed the town of Henryville, Indiana.

Current Kentucky watches and warnings:

Hope everyone's OK, and stays that way.

We had a doozy of a storm blow through but it was basically fine. There doesn't seem to be any damage. A tornado watch (conditions indicated a tornado was possible) but no tornado warnings, or tornadoes in the area (that I know of).

Just heard from Mysteryman on FB:

Quote:
Jeff XXXXXX: We did get hit,but it was only a glancing blow, with some minor damage to a few homes. Roofs blown off, decks destroyed, etc. Thankfully nobody was hurt.

CBC is warning us that it's headed this way, but they're just saying a high wind warning. No one is saying we'll get tornadoes.

@Butrflynet,
I asked MM if he'd be going out on search and rescue with the fire department. He said:

Quote:
Jeff xxxxx We have already done rescue operations. The most severe damage in our area was 1 house that got hit hard, losing its whole second floor. Fortunately, nobody was hurt.

@Butrflynet,
Latest WaPo blog update:

Quote:
6:55 p.m. update: Storms that have destroyed several small towns in southern Indiana and elsewhere continue. In the last hour, over 20 additional tornado warnings have been issued and we’re now closing in on 200 tornado warnings on the day with 67 reports of tornadoes on the ground. Both numbers continue to climb as tornadic storms impact areas from eastern Ohio to Mississippi and Alabama. If most of the tornadoes that were reported today are confirmed, this outbreak is well placed to surpass the previous March calendar day record of 59.

Of particular concern are a number of radar signatures, like the one shown in this loop in Kentucky, indicating debris being picked up near the southern end of the hook (where the tornado is). In the coming period, eastern Kentucky and into eastern Tennessee (Chattanooga in central Tn. faced its second tornado warning of the day recently) are under the gun for the most intense storms, but supercells capable of producing tornadoes continue in a line to the south and east.

@mismi,
Am watching the weather channel. They're saying the whole region hit today (including ALA) will be under tornado watches and warnings all evening. They're highlighting the Montgomery area in ALA.

Aren't you glad you cleared out your safe area?

@Butrflynet,

Here's a picture of the National Doppler Radar. Unbelievable how widespread it is. My husband's cousin had softball size hail up in Florence. Softball size. That's just nuts to me.

My sis in law lives up in Huntsville and things are a mess around there.

So far we are getting rain and some wind gusts but we aren't scheduled to get any serious stuff until after 8:00pm.

I am. I told Rockhead that I was going to frame it up and get a futon in there so we can camp out there in the Spring.
