The universe is everything that you can imagine plus everything that you can't.
Only stranger, and more wonderful.
For more ideas:
The Universe as a Hologram
" There is a theory which states that if anyone discovers just exactly what the universe is for and why we are here, that it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. Then there is a theory which states that this has already happened."
- The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
The universe is very big
It's way far bigger than I am
I cannot explain, nor versify
It won't fit in an iamb.
Richard Buckminster Fuller.
"Universe is the aggregate of all humanity's consciously apprehended and communicated nonsimultaneous and only partially overlapping experiences"
Marcus Aurelius
"The universe is change; our life is what our thoughts make it."
I don't know what the Universe is;
but I know that it isn't a big mistake.
What the Universe is is a question often addressed in philosophy but it's a fair question. There are actually several universes mostly differing by our perceptions of them.
There is The Observable Universe which is limited by how far we can see.
There is The Expanding Universe which is limited by how far matter and energy could have traveled since the "Big Bang" , some 13 to 15 billion years.
There is "The Cosmos" which includes everything that ever was (or will be for that matter).
There is the "Creation" which includes everything that was "created" by a Big Bang, a singularity, or a God.
These different interpretations of the word may or may not all be the same. That we don't know.
There are several other "Universes" also in contention for the exact meaning of the word Universe but those are IMO the main ones that are usually meant by the word Universe or Universal.
