Dragon 'awakens' for new year celebration
Tuesday, January 24, 2012
Brant Ward / San Francisco Chronicle

A 160-foot dragon was unveiled Monday, and hundreds of people were on hand in Chinatown for the start of the Lunar New Year, the longest and most important holiday in the Chinese calendar. Above: The dragon is taken across the walkway above Kearny Street. Left: In Portsmouth Square, men stand on benches to watch the dragon. Mayor Ed Lee "awakened" the dragon, participating in a traditional "eye dotting" ceremony, where the eyes are painted in. The Year of the Dragon festivities culminate in the Chinese New Year Parade on Feb. 11.
