Avastin disappoints against ovarian cancer
By MARILYNN MARCHIONE | AP – 2 hrs 23 mins ago

Avastin, the blockbuster drug that just lost approval for treating breast cancer, now looks disappointing against ovarian cancer, too. Two studies found it did not improve survival for most of these patients and kept their disease from worsening for only a few months, with more side effects.

The Genentech drug won approval in Europe last week for advanced ovarian cancer. But its maker has no immediate plans to seek the same approval in the United States. After talking with the Food and Drug Administration, "we do not believe the data will support approval" although no final decision has been made, said Charlotte Arnold, a spokeswoman for Genentech, part of the Swiss company Roche.

@JTT,
Not to worry, JTT.
The link gets you to the article & that's all that matters.
(If it's the link you're concerned about?)

'Twas that indeed, MsO, but it also kinda pisses me off how these modern day snake oil salesmen can collect huge sums for, well, what appears to be highly refined snake oil.

@JTT,
Just read the article right through, JTT.

It does appear that Avistan is of minimal benefit to suffers of a variety of advanced cancers, so why the European approval at this time, I can't imagine.

Seems to me the enormous amounts of money spent on this drug would be far better spent on extending & improving the quality of palliative care of advanced cancer sufferers , rather than building up false hopes at huge expense. Say nothing of the side-effects of the drug ...

@msolga,
... or spend the money instead on serious research on cancer causes & cures?
Though that wouldn't exactly be a money spinner for pharmaceutical companies, would it?

Yesterday or the day before, I read an A2K thread about scientists having developed a lethal flu virus which could potentially wipe out & immobilize the populations of huge cities. (tried to find it again but can't, sorry..)

It made me wonder who had financed such research & why.
And I constantly wonder why research like that is financed at the expense of that which would actually be of benefit to human beings.
There's a lot of research money out there being spent on quite dubious purposes.
Let's just hope it's not our/your taxes at work!

My husband was on that drug for over 2 years. He was stage 4 colon cancer, but wanted to try it. It did nothing for him. The cost was astonomical, thank goodness, covered by insurance.

It seems that they are giving avastin to everyone suffering from cancer and seeing where it works.

Treating cancer is more than starving the cells. They just can't find the right formula. (or they don't want to, since someone is making a lot of money off this)

@PUNKEY,
I'm sorry for your terrible loss, Punkey, but I'm glad to hear that you didn't get stiffed with the costs too.

When ordinary folk pull off a simple little fraud, there sure are a bunch of officious assholes ready to make sure that the law is upheld.
