Modern Household Conveniences That We Take For Granted

This morning I received a call, where I had to refer to some written material. The envelope was in another room. I took my cordless phone, went to the other end of the house, found the envelope, and continued with my conversation.

Then I realized that 20 years ago, I could not have done that. I would have had to put the phone down, walk to the other end of the house, retrieve the envelope, and walk back to the phone. I thought about it. There are so many household conveniences that we take absolutely for granted nowadays.

What kinds of conveniences, that you take for granted, did not exist when you were younger?

My computer, bread machine, snow blower, cable tv, remote control for tv, cd player with "remote control", cordless phone, cell phone, microwave oven, digital camera, Roomba vac, etc...

I could go on and on of course. It's amazing all the contraptions that have been invented in just my time alone.

Husker and Rog- How old are you two????? Confused

Even I used a flush toilet as soon as I was out of diapers!

Hey, what about disposable diapers? I had to send my son's diapers to the diaper service for washing.

I put it like this Phoenix - we had our first refrigerator (as opposed to ice box) when I was in the first grade.

We always had a refrigerator, but my grandmother had an icebox in her summer bungalow.

The lady down the street had a wringer washer.

husker- Dental floss?? I think that they still sell it!

As far as sanitary facilities are concerned, I had been living in my house on LI for at least 10 years, (around the late 70s, I think) before they put in real sewers, instead of the blankety blank septic tank that was backing up on a regular basis.

When I was little we heated our house with a wood stove and my grandmother also had a wringer washer. We just bought a new washer and it actually has a hand wash setting.

We also only went to see the dentist if we had a toothache.

Answering machines,and now voice mail.

No VCR when I was young. I would have loved that.

Coffee maker.

Oh, I know they existed (as "percolators") when I was a kid, but instant coffe was we had every day. The percolator came out for special occasions.

Now we even have an espresso maker. Java heaven!

My since I'm not at home that long to use any appliances...

my cell phone, my pc, just for my communication needs, they're a luxury that I really, really don't need, but I've learned to cherish them as much as my phone, TV, and could prolly live without them, but I don't want to.

When I moved into a house that had my first dishwasher in 1967, my initial thought was,

"What do I need THIS for?"

After doing one load of dishes, I KNEW! Very Happy

Phoenix asks a fairly innocent question about household conveniences that people take for granted.

Let's listen to Montana's reply....

Now, I knew Canadians were a different breed of cat, and a bit eccentric, but never would I have imagined them using snow blowers in their houses.

That's what I like about this site -- you learn something new all the time.
