My daughter has qualified for the Northeast Regional Spelling Bee. She made top 2 in her class, then went to District where she came in top 3 which qualifies her to participate in the Regional Spelling Bee. Next step (if she finishes in the top 4) would be the Nationals in Washington DC.

She really wants to go to the Regionals - it will be a little bit of an expense for us - I believe the school will pay for the registration fee, but it is at least an 8 hour drive and hotel for several days. We have 2 months to prepare. I let her know that we will not pay for this expense unless she agrees to work every day.

Anyone familiar with these bees? I have a book that we have started to use - to help learn Root words, suffixes, prefixes, etc. I found a good website as well.

Just any direction or help on this.

@sozobe,
Thanks - she is really excited about it. I've gotten her to commit at a minimin each school day - 15 minutes and each weekend day 30 minutes - but it is expected that she study longer on days when she does not have other committments or homework.

The great thing is - one of the other kids in her school also made it. Very unusual as they have not had one child from the school make it in the 8 years since we have been there - and there have been only two previously. So to have 2 in one year is basically unheard of.

@Linkat,
That's great if she can study with that one then.

Mine's in a geography bee, she was a top three finisher in her grade (which surprised me), she's studying here and there with her friend the top finisher. She seems to be having fun with it, having someone to study WITH seems to help a lot.

@sozobe,
Yes - and congrats on the geography bee - we also have participated in that but she isn't as good and didn't place at all last year. Our district bee for the geography is in Feb. Considering the regional spelling bee is in Feb, it is unlikely I'd have her participate this year - especially where it isn't even an interest of hers.

And I am a horrible speller. Interesting things I am learning about this though - I asked her how she envisions her words when she spells them. She says her mind is black and then the word appears, she looks at it and determines if she thinks the spelling is right and then adjusts a letter or two.

Amazing how the minds works - I know I've seen some kids that will mimic writing the word in their hands to help them spell.
