How to prepare for a spelling bee?

My daughter has attended a district spelling bee. She came in 2nd for her grade, and was able to compete to make the regional spelling bee. Unfortunately you need to be in the top 4 (of grades up through 8th) to go onto the regional bee. She did not make the top 4.

She is a good speller. I am a horrible speller. She would like the opportunity to make it to the regional bee next year. Then it would be onto the national. To be honest I don't think she is good enough for the national, but she does have potentional to make the regional. They do get a list of words... she knew about 80% of her grade's spelling words. But that isn't good enough for the regional.

Does anyone have ideas on how to learn to spell words correctly? What tricks - is there a good book? This would be ideal for a Christmas gift.

bees cant spell.

I recall preparing partly through drills and partly through just reading. E. g. when you read at/above grade level, there are going to be harder words just in general. See them enough and you get used to them -- and I think understanding context is important.
