@gungasnake,
I have you on ignore gunga - because you're a bit of a fuckwit.

But I do get to see your new topics via twitter. What joy.

The volt is a hybrid - so yeah it's got 40 miles range on battery only - but it wasn't designed for battery only. Not defending it - just providing extra info in the interests of full disclosure.

Cheers.

And how much work has been done on the combustible engine in the past 100 years? They still burn gas at a stupid rate but no need to fix what ain't broke eh?

@Ceili,
They still burn gas, but they sure do last longer.

No, I know that's not your point, but they really are better, and probably cost less than before from the standpoint hours worked to pay for one. Likewise, I bet the electrics are way better.

@Ceili,
Electric cars will make sense if and only if somebody gets their act totally together with super-capacitors or some other totally revolutionary way to store electricity arises and comes into common use. Cars running on batteries make no more sense now than they did 115 years ago.

In fact a hell of a lot:

http://www.angellabsllc.com/

http://mobilyo.ru/

http://ecomotors.com/

The United States is a vast grave yard of better ideas and superior technologies which were viewed as disruptive technology and left to rot on the vine but on rare occasions, a technology comes along which is so good that some foreign country comes along and grabs it and that appears to have happened in the case of the yomobile/Ё Мобиль. That story could end up with Russia dominating the automotive industry for the next 40 years.

@hingehead,
The Volt and the Yomobile are not that similar. The engine to generate electricity in the Volt is an admission of failure; the Yomobile is basically similar to a diesel locomotive and uses electricity in lieu of a transmission i.e. the Russians have eliminated the weakest link in modern cars just as all heavy vehicles do.

The main difference is that Russia does not tolerate libtards and/or environmental whackos wrecking their energy and petroleum initiatives and hence has a good supply of inexpensive gasoline going well into the future and if, some day, super-capacitors do come available, it will be easy to adapt the Yomobile to use them.
