I didn’t think gout really existed or at least any more. I thought it was something from a Jane Austen novel – seemed gout was always acting up in those novels – good reason to go to bath for some gout treatments.
Well then several years ago, my dad said something about his gout acting up. And now I hear all over advertisements medicines for Gout. Well I’m not Elizabeth Bennet so what is up with gout? And why the heck is it all over the place now?
A large proportion of the population are at the age they might think they have the gout, since they tend to be full of aches and pains anyway.
Just another way for the medical industry to "sell" us a product that treats something that can usually be prevented by eating better.
I used to do lab work in a rheumatology department, and we had experts in gout there. This wikipedia article fits with my long ago memory of it. Not all of it is diet related, in any case, though it is associated.
(In fact, it was in a uric acid metabolism conference that I started smoking again after quitting for some years. Rolls eyes..)

@ossobuco,
gout IS making a comeback and , what seems rather unusual , it is affecting women !
it used to be considered a disease for old and rich men that drank too much port and ate too much mutton .
here is an interesting british research report :

A good friend of mine
was diagnosed with gout today.
He said that it was disablingly painful.
He has been out of work, as a trial judge, for 2 days now.
