Chritian's Chihuaha, Princess, weighs 2 pounds. Molly's Pit Bull, Psycho, weighs 14 pounds. They each seem to be gaining about a pound a month. The Pit Bull will soon weigh three times more than the Chihuahua. How many pounds will Princess weigh then?

@Lindastanich,
Probably easier ways to solve this but I just added a pound per hound until the numbers worked. (3 pounds/ 15 pounds... no. 4 pounds/ 16 pounds... no. Etc.)

If I were his/her math teacher I'd be happier to see something like this

let x be the number of pounds each dog needs to gain. We know that

14 + x = 3(2+x)
14 + x = 6 + 3x
14 = 6 + 3x - x
14 = 6 + 2x
2x = 14 -6
2x = 8
x=4

Pit Bull 14+4 = 18
Chihuahua 2 + 4 = 6
