The cost of renting a bus to go snowboarding was split evenly by the 20 students planning to go. The day before the trip, 10 more students decided to go. Dividing the cost evenly among all 30 students brought the average cost down by $9.00 per person. What was the total cost of renting the bus?

@lillyrox,
Nah. $540

Showing the working:

TC = Total Coast
S=Original cost per student

TC=20 * S
TC= 30 * (S-9)
TC= 30S - 270

ergo
20* S = 30S - 270
10S=270

S=27

Substitute back into first equation
TC=20 * 27
TC = 540

PS it's a math problem not a word problem

@Lindastanich,
You take the square root of pi, divide that by EMC2, add your mother's age, subtract your father's age, and add in where your mother's father was born. Bingo.

@Lindastanich,
You don't need two unknowns

T/20 - 9 =T/30

(A solution method for an equation with fractions is to multiply throughout by the common denominator, i.e. 60... the LCM of 20 and 30 )

@fresco,
That's nicer.

3T/60 - 2T/60 =9
T/60 =9
T=540

I just like simultaneous equations.

But note the operative word in the OP is "help".

@Lindastanich,
NB "Word problem" implies "algebra problem".
By this stage the only "problem" should be writing the algebra. The arithmetic, or even "the answer" is considered to be secondary from a teaching point of view.

@Lindastanich,
It might be - what axioms were you assuming for initial conditions?

I don't understand a word you guys are saying, I'm only 12. If each of the 30 students pay $9, $9(30) = $270. Basic math. BTW, it's a math and word promlem. It's a math problem put into words, hence word problem.

@lillyrox,
The average cost wasn't $9 per person - it was REDUCED by $9 per person.
