Hey everyone:
I know that this is an unusual request, in that most poetry requests in here are for English-language poems- or, at least, translations- but does anyone know a poem by Cernuda that includes the lines, 'no es nada, es una sustilla.' I've been searching far and wide, looking on the internet, but all to no avail. Does anyone know this poem?
Thanks.
I guess you're looking for this one.
No es nada, es un suspiro
No es nada, es un suspiro,
pero nunca sació nadie esa nada
ni nadie supo nunca de qué alta roca nace.
Ni puedes tú saberlo, tú, que eres
nuestro afán, nuestro amor,
nuestra angustia de hombres;
palabra que creamos
en horas de dolor solitario.
Un suspiro no es nada,
como tampoco es nada
el viento entre los chopos,
la bruma sobre el mar
o ese impulso que guía
un cuerpo hacia otro cuerpo.
Nada mi fe, mi llama,
ni este vivir oscuro que la lleva;
su latido o su ardor
no son sino un suspiro,
aire triste o risueño
con el viento se escapa.
Sombra, si tú lo sabes, dime;
deja el hondo fluir
libre sobre tu imagen invisible,
acuérdate del hombre que suspira
antes de que la luz vele tu muerte,
vuelto él también latir de aire
suspiro entre tus manos poderosas.
Yes; that's it! Thank-you so much, fbaezer. What do you think of Cernuda?
Actually I have read very little of him.
A few poems in college (he was more commented because of an openly homosexual poem than about his style of capacity).
"No es nada, es un suspiro" is great. It has made me look into more of Cernuda's work.
So I am the one who has to thank you, dròm et reve.
I'm glad that we both benefitted from my request! Have you found many other good Cernuda poems?
