If you go to a museums collections of reconstructed sections of fossils, they usually use an epoxy or plastic (or even aluminum) and the color differences from the natural v the reconstructed segments are easily distinguished.
Smaller fossils, like trilobotes or bryozoans or small fish , are often "cast" ina resin plastic and then painted so they look like the original. Usually these are sold for study purposes and /or are sold in fossil shops and specimen dealers.
