Religion has at least two sides. In its fundamentalist side it is one of man's worst inventions, a cause of hardening of the categories. In its "mystical" side, it's one of our greatest achievements. Re-ligion refers to the reconnection we may achieve with the Cosmos, whatever that is (religare: to reconnet).
In Buddhism, at least its meditative versions, e.g., zen, no connection is necessary: we are always one with our Cosmic ground, but we can free ourselves from the illusion of alienation/separation (what is known as "ego").
