a woman was describing her shabby house in Houndsditch, she said "It's no use pretending it's a palace, one room up and down at the front and the same at the back." what did she mean by saying "It's no use pretending it's a palace"?

That's a phrase that one might use for one's possessions; it's a self deprecating idea.

I don't dress well but everyone loves my generosity.

It may just be an old jalopy but it gets me from point A to B.
