I am a small business owner and a former friend who is obviously desperate, filed taxes using a 1099 from my business in the amount of 33,000.00. Will I have to pay taxes as well as a business owner, do I turn him in, I did not sign or give him a 1099.

HE will be in a lot of trouble IF he is caught.

How did you know he did this?

Just make sure YOUR filings are accurate.

If one of you gets audited, both of you will. He has the burden of proof.

You didn't do anything wrong unless you agreed to this fraud.

@PUNKEY,
he_l no, that would be suicide. I am contemplating turning him in just to cover my own butt. I think that would probably be the smart thing to do.

@peeps920,
1099's don't require a signature. The only thing that requires a signature is the form transmitting the batch of 1099's to the IRS.

There is something odd going on. People don't usually try to generate a fake 1099 for themselves unless they are trying to hide an income source and justify their increased spending spree from the IRS.

If it were me, I'd go to the former friend and ask them directly if what you heard was true. I'd also ask to see a copy of any paperwork that was submitted. Depending upon how pissed off I was, I'd also make a call to the IRS anonymous tip line for whistle blowers.

This has been puzzling to me since I first saw the question. I have to wonder just what is going on here.

This person needs to show a source of income. So he is "hiding" within the corporation of someone else.
