Most People Are Supposed To Pay This Tax. Almost Nobody Actually Pays It.

These state added sales tax either need "force retailers to collect it at point of sale" or completely end this particular tax on online purchases.

Do you pay your state's relevant use tax?

@tsarstepan,
The article doesn't make it clear; this is in regard to state income taxes, right?

The tax in question is a sales tax for goods sold online and not a tax on income.

@tsarstepan,
It seems to be collected through a state's income tax return, though.

@InfraBlue,
In NM, businesses are supposed to pay what is called a compensating tax on anything purchased out of state, whether it's internet or not. It's at the state rate and excluded county and city taxes. This is filed on the same monthly/semiannual report as gross receipts. I'm not sure if there is an individual requirement or not, and decline to comment on whether I've ever placed an internet order.

Online sales tax bill hits a potential firewall
A bill aimed at collecting sales tax for online goods has cleared the Senate. However, the House will prove to be a problem as many see the bill as a tax increase – something many Republicans pledged they would not do.

@tsarstepan,
But it isn't a federal tax increase. I think it can be sold to the larger Republican caucus even if the extremes don't understand it.

@engineer,
It could even be argued that it is not a new tax at state level. Merely the enforcement of existing rates. In any case, it isn't going to alter my shopping habits a bit.
