The diapers came in and my husband was delighted to see that they
were nothing like the diapers of yesteryear that he’d imagined with horror. There would be no swishing in toilets and gagging -- not even I was up for that mess. No, these diapers came with a waterproof outer shell and snaps instead of pins.
I am reading an article talking about her choice of cloth diaper in order to live a green life. I know cloth diaper is more envirnmentally friendly than paper diaper. However, I am not fairly understand the above passage. What does the author refer to when she says "diapers of yesteryear." BTW, the author's husband was strongly opposed the usage of cloth diaper, considering it as an act of "a dirty hippie ".
What is "swishing in toilets and gagging " and the meaning og this whole sentence?
I know what is a waterproof outer, but what are "snaps instead of pins"?
@Nancy88,
"Diapers of yesteryear" were just rectangular pieces of thick cotton. You would wrap it around the baby's bottom and fasten at the hips with large safety pins. When the baby soiled them, you would rinse them out in the toilet to remove the large waste products before washing. Since they weren't water proof, their was a significant chance of leak through. "Dirty hippie" refers to a stereotype from the US '70s of unkept adults in their late teens, early twenties[/url] who were into drug use and lived a "natural" lifestyle. Hippies were also instrumental in the anti-War movement in the 70's and those who opposed that movement painted that stereotype is a very negative light. Does that help?
I was a pro-cloth diaper pioneer. There was always a steady resistance to disposable diapers which are not made of paper. The so-called disposables degrade slowly in landfills, creating ecological problems for generations.
At the time my daughter was born, 33 years ago, disposable diapers did not have elastic leg bands and were notoriously leaky. I used plastic pants as well as the more decorative nylon pants over cloth diapers.
I used a diaper service which delivered clean diapers to the door once a week. I also washed and line dried the diapers in the summer.
As far as the designation of "dirty hippie" is concerned, there are people actively opposed to ecologically sound practices who personify those who follow "green living" practices as dirty hippies or as tree huggers.
However, as the saying goes, we all live downstream.
Finally, even the new diapers have to be dunked in the toilet to remove solid waste. Gagging? Really! When a baby wears a disposable diaper, the baby has to be thoroughly cleaned of solid waste.

I did the above, I also had this type...
I'm considered somewhat of a hippie amongst my friends and family.
Most of them were pretty weirded out by my use of cloth.

this is an esl/efl thread, POM - can you explain gagging in relation to diapers to the OP?
@ehBeth,
Gagging was in the original quote that opened this thread.
@plainoldme,
Yes - the o.p. wants to know what it means.
This is an ESL question.
@ehBeth,
OK, to gag means to be on the verge of vomiting. Generally, people gag when they see or smell unpleasant things.
