That night, I lay in the heat of my grandparents’ upstairs bedroom, listening to the drone of the window fan mixed with the song of balladeer crickets. The house smelled like summer and spent sunshine, and the scent from supper of Gram’s vinegary lettuce.
What does the phrase "smelled like summer and spent sunshine" mean here?
I can't tell you what he was smelling precisely, but this is a case where you have to imagine what summer smells like, flowers, fresh cut hay, warm breezes perfumed with grass. These are smells you wouldn't smell in winter. He's painting a picture asking you to fill in the blanks with your imagination.
@Nancy88,
Quote:smelled like ... spent sunshine
I'd say that those are the smells that the sun has generated/caused during daytime heating that linger into the darkness.
@JTT,
... that linger into the darkness and are enhanced by the changes in humidity
