Isao Okano apparently won three all Japan titles against substantially bigger opponents as a general rule.
The white guy standing next to Okano on the podium in that shot from the 64 olympic medal awards was Jim Bregman of the old Washington Judo Club, probably the technically best caucasian judoist to that time.
For the less familiar.....
You score points in judo by doing something which simulates incapacitating or killing an adversary in war. The idea behind winning by holding an opponent immobilized for 20 seconds was originally that in that much time in a war situation, one of your buddies would have gotten there and killed the guy with a spear while you held him......
