@Walter Hinteler,
But he re-posted the same URL himself!: Wink

It is strange that Bill Keller himself re-tweeted a link to that fake column - only said it was fake 4 hours later

Very confusing! Confused

@msolga,
Now there is much speculation about a possible fake NYT Bill Keller account, or whether his real Twitter account has been hacked!
What a strange episode!

@roger,
There are a lot of you who support the blatant war crimes and terrorism of the USA, aren't there, Roger?

How is it that folks can do that and make claims to being moral citizens?

What does he need a Twitter account for when he has the NYT?

@JTT,
Because people post & share information there.

@msolga,
Maybe we've been hoaxed, and that is the explanation I was hoping.

I'm more inclined to believe that than that the three largest credit card operators in the country are boycotting a major newspaper due to political content. Still, what I'm inclined to believe doesn't always corrospond to reality. I do try to keep reality and inclination separate.

Anyway, I hope the original was a fake.

@msolga,
The "Keller" Twitter page on which the link appeared was also phony. Twitter shows a blue checkmark when they have verified that a well-known person's account is real. Bill Keller has a real Twitter account with the verification check mark. Someone set up a phony Bill Keller account. They fooled Twitter by using a capitalized "I" in place of a lower case "l" but the phony Twitter account did not have a verification mark. Someone spent a lot of time preparing this hoax.

@wandeljw,
Yes, that's what the Twitter "experts" figured out last night, wandel!
They also apparently fooled (at least one) NYT tech person.
Very clever hoax!

You oughta be really used to that by now, Roger. Remember the Maine, Gulf of Tonkin, Iraq illegal invasion, Afghanistan illegal invasion, the setting up of the Taliban, the monumental war crimes that involved bombing Cambodia and Laos, over half a century of terrorism against Cuba, the overthrow of innumerable countries around the world, US support and material aid to PolPot and the Khmer Rouge, ....

Y'all surely rank as the most duped people on the planet.

But remember, it's you the people who control government, not the other way around.

Who are you voting for in November, Tweedledum or Tweedledee?

At least we can stop wondering what those nasty credit companies are up to! Wink
Thing is, apart from the first rather bewildering paragraph, I thought it was a terrific op-ed!

didn't they boycott WikiLeaks? I can't imagine it would be a far step to boycott a newspaper. I think that's why it was a somewhat believable hoax.

Wikileaks news (Twitter if a fantastic news source!) :

Sweden has refused to interview Julian Assange at the Ecuador Embassy in London. No reason has been given for the refusal.

Amazing, really ... For months Julian Assange has been "wanted for questioning" by the Swedish authorities. (there are not any actual charges against him.)

Now that they have the opportunity, they refuse.
So what was the Interpol red notice about then? Confused

Quote:
The Swedish authorities have rejected an offer to interview WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in the embassy in London where he is seeking political asylum.

Ecuador had given Sweden permission to interview WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange inside their London Embassy - where the 40-year-old has been for six weeks. ...

... Sources at the embassy told Press Association that an approach was made to the authorities in Sweden last Wednesday, offering them the chance to interview Assange about the allegations, but it had been turned down, without any reason being given. ...

...Ecuador has said they will not announce a decision on the asylum request until after the London 2012 Olympics.

The most recent calls for the US to clarify its position on the possible extradition of Julian Assange from Sweden to the US to face charges there:

#1. Spanish judge, Baltasar Garzon:

Quote:
A SPANISH judge has criticised the US investigation into WikiLeaks, saying the grand jury process that could lead to charges being filed against the secret-spilling site's founder is undemocratic.

Baltasar Garzon, a human rights lawyer best known for indicting former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet in 1998, recently agreed to act as an international coordinator for Julian Assange, the embattled WikiLeaks founder.

"A democratic country can't operate with its back to a person who is suspected of very serious crimes that could deprive him of liberty for a long time," Mr Garzon said.

"The United States should make it known what it is doing so that Mr Assange can stand up for his rights. We don't know what we are facing."

#2. West Australian politician, Melissa Parke.
Is asking for information that the Australian government appears to be doing its best to avoid asking of the US.

Quote:
THE West Australian Labor MP Melissa Parke has called on the US Attorney-General, Eric Holder, to make a categorical statement ruling out that America is seeking to extradite the WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, to prosecute him for espionage.

Her call comes amid persisting public debate about whether the US has secretly convened a grand jury in Virginia with the purpose of prosecuting Mr Assange and others for a ''conspiracy to communicate or transmit national defence information''.

''In the light of the public information regarding a grand jury investigation, it would be helpful if the US Attorney-General would categorically state that the US has no intention of seeking the extradition of Julian Assange from Sweden,'' Ms Parke told the Herald yesterday.

Finally, a request for the Swedish Ombudsman for Justice to investigate the handling of Julian Assange's case by the prosecutor.:

Quote:
torsdagen den 2:e augusti 2012

To The Swedish Ombudsmen for Justice (JO)

Gothenburg and Stockholm August, 2, 2012

We most urgently require that the ombudsmen for justice investigates the Swedish handling of the case of Julian Assange, by the prosecutor Marianne Ny, Director of the Public Prosecution Authority Development Center in Gothenburg.

1. Mr. Assange could have been investigated by the Swedish police before he left the country on September 27, 2010, and with the knowledge of the prosecutor Marianne Ny. At that date Mr. Assange had been available for an interview for five weeks.

2. Since Mr. Assange has arrived in London, he has on several occasions offered to give his own version of what happened in Stockholm in August 2010, at the Swedish embassy, or be questioned by video link.

3. In late July, Mr. Assange offered to talk to the Swedish prosecutor, now at the embassy of Ecuador, where he has asked for asylum.

The prosecutor, Ms. Ny has on all occasions neglected or rejected Mr. Assanges proposals.

Between August 13, and August 16 Mr. Assange had consensual sex with two different women.

On August 20, 2010, the two women went to a local police station in Stockholm in order to urge Mr. Assange to undergo an HIV-test. At that point the police chose to start an investigation about rape, without the consent of the two women.

On the same day a prosecutor decided to issue an arrest warrant for Mr. Assange. At the time the newspaper Expressen, headlined a front page article “Assange accused of rape”.

The next day another prosecutor decided that there was no reason for the warrant.

On August 30, Julian Assange was interrogated for the first time by the Swedish police, and denied all allegations.

The day after the lawyer of the two women, Mr. Claes Borgström, who also was a former Swedish Ombudsman for equality, requested that the case should be reopened by the prosecutor in Gothenburg, Marianne Ny.

Julian Assange is now again accused of rape, molest, and sexual harassment.

Mr. Assange stayed in Sweden until September 27 for further questioning.
We are, like his lawyer, Mr. Baltasar Garzón, seriously concerned, regarding the lack of safeguards and transparency with which actions are being taken against Julian Assange, and the harassment he is being subjected to which has irreparable effects on his physical and mental wellbeing.

The threats against his person are further aggravated by the complicit behavior of the Swedish governmental authorities.
Mr. Assange's civil rights, and his rights according to the European Convention have been violated.

@msolga,
But really Olga--what are we to say about somebody who deliberately placed himself in a position where the probability of his human rights being violated was substantially increased?

People who think they can beat the system have chosen to be out with the wolves.

It's quite likely that Mr Manning was off his head in some way but Mr Assange knew what he was doing. A large pile of top-secret American diplomatic cables strewn about the streets of the whole world. Ye Gods!!! Just by pressing a submit button. Easy money.

Whatever compassion we might feel for the guy's plight we have to work for our money and keep our heads down.

Germaine Greer, Rupert Murdoch, Clive James, Julian Assange----whatever is coming next?
