a billion: 1,000,000,000
a trillion: 1,000,000,000,000

Unless I thought about it real hard, I know of no other way to answer this question.

Question That's not true, though the names change the numbers don't.

First, a trillion doesn't equal a thousand millions. A billion does.

Second, 1,000,000,000,000,000 is a quadrillion or a thousand trillion.

Who makes up the names? Mathematicians throughout the years. No one person that I'm aware of.

We have certain prefixes in place and I believe on this matter, we have things a little screwed up. For instance,
If bi=2, tri=3, quad=4
Then it seems that a billion should be 1,000,000 because of the two sets of thousands. And a trillion should be 1,000,000,000. Quadrillion should likewise be 1,000,000,000,000. But, that's just my simple mind thinking.

There is also a zillion. But, that seems to be a fictitious number according to the table of "Names of Large and Small Numbers." Here is a link:

I had this conversation with someone else one time. We were talking about literature and he was surprised that I hadn't read a few books he had mentioned. I thought it was a simple understanding that with the plethora of books out there to read, I just might have missed a few.

At 70 John, I'd have to say that you probably have an expertise in several areas that far exceeds other's. Lacking knowledge in something is no biggy. Sometimes, I get confused on things I should know rather well. One time I made a stupid statement about the change of seasons in connection to the earth's rotation around the sun. One I dare repeat here. I'm not ready for another storm of laughter just yet. All this to say, I can relate. It happens to all of us.

That's mainly why I just simply try to answer someone's question if I think I know it or watch a topic to learn something new myself.

Hello John, your name smells of Irishness too, John Treanor, nice to be in contact with you. There are a few Treanors' around here too. I'm not sure of how they spell their surname. Some use Traynor. Cool
