I think I think that 'suit' got into webster by boredom of the powers that be, combined with misusage.

How's that for a snotty answer?

It may have won a place, a surprise to me, but that is one the ways language moves.

Well...I think I have heard "furniture suit" down here. I would never call it that - I might call it a "set" . I can't remember ever using the phrase"furniture suite"....ever.

I was thinking that there is also suit of cards. You don't call that a suite, and yet it kind of follows the same logic doesn't it?

ehhh..I don't know. I'm going to bed.
