Sometimes little tricks help.

I was doing the following for awhile, and I'm going to start doing it again, since I'm starting to put money aside for a new car.

I restrict myself to spending money to only 1 day a week. I pick Saturday.

Of course there might be an unavoidable expense, like a toll on the road, or if you're low on gas (then you can just buy a enough to get you through to your appointed day).

I was really surprised that for the most part, it's unnecessary to spend money (beside paying bills) more than one day a week.

On that day, I purchase whatever I need and/or want, and That's It For the Week! I fill up the gas tank, buy food, including food for lunches during the week, and anything else I need for the house or my family.
It's also amazing how something you wanted on Wednesday it unneeded by the time Saturday rolls around.

I find if you make things like this a game, it really helps.
