um... easy on the offers of taking on his pain. I've got enough of my own to deal with.

Hope things are improved a bit today, Bear.

I can stand unassisted today....barely. Doc at 4:00. I'm loaded with pain meds. I've arranged for all my gear to be picked up and set up for my show Saturday and we're going to do it unplugged so I can sit. If he wants me to go to the hospital for snything besides just an MRI it'll hold 'til Monday. Gotta work.

@blueveinedthrobber,
Be extra careful with your back while you're on the pain meds. Folks are more likely to re-injure while on pain meds, because they feel better, but the original injury is still there.

several compressed discs.. leaking. One disc herniated with a spur in the nerve. Degenerative. The trick of course will be to find a neurosurgeon who is willing to operate on someone with no insurance. Unlike hospitals, the docs can tell me to **** off. what a life. My performing career is almosy surely in the shitter regardless.

@blueveinedthrobber,
I'm so sorry to hear about the results. You are correct, at this level of medical care there are few options other than all out charity. I suggest you get your friends together to do a benefit concert and check out neurosurgeons in India - I'm serious. Even with airfare it's a lot cheaper than paying here and the care for paying foreign customers is excellent. The other option is to drop your income to your states level of Medicaid (usually under $10,000 for an individual) and see if they can find you someone willing to do the surgery. Technically, you can also apply for insurance because they can't turn you down for a preexisting condition now, but they will charge huge premiums to sign you up, but it might be worth looking in to. I would also suggest you speak to a social worker at a hospital clinic as to what your options are with paying small amounts monthly over the rest of your lifetime. Isn't American Healthcare grand!

@blueveinedthrobber,
Is your doctor a spine specialist? Your spine description is the same as my diagnosis. I didn't need surgery. I'm posting this a second time because it's worth a try before you have surgery. ---BBB

Bear, I want to suggest a possible improvement in your pain that won't cost you an arm and a leg.

I had the same sort of severe pain for almost a year last year. My orthopedic doctor, on the staff of the best hospital in Albuquerque, decided after his treatments didn't work that I should be seen by an orthopedic doctor who specializes in spines. He referred me that that busy doctor. and it took about a month to get an appointment. The doctor took x-rays, not take an expensive MRI, and discovered the damage to my spine's discs in my lower back. He suggested that, instead of surgery, he start with inject a medication that he had good results with into the lower three disks in my spine. I agreed to the treatment.

Took another month to get on his schedule. I was in a wheel chair when I went to his surgery room in the hospital's surgery floor. He had large equipment that showed my entire spine on a screen next to my bed and where the injection needles should go. He used the equipment to know where to inject six places on the three discs while his assistant made sure I was comfortable. No pain resulted during the process. I was wheeled out of the room and Butrflynet drove me home. Within four hours, I began to feel pain relief. The next morning, I was pain free, I could stand up straight for the first time in months, and I could walk without pain. The doctor checked with me two days later and told me some of his patients have pain relief even faster than I experienced.

I had suffered for nearly a year and no doctor's treatments helped me. Then the spine doctor treated me and his exams and treatments finally worked.

You may want your doctor to refer you to a spine specialist orthopedic surgeon. It's worth a try.

Me too. How many times have you done that for other people, Bear?

Sorry about the really bad news though.

no benefit for me. it would be embarrasing. I'm foolishly perhaps, too prideful for that.

UNC Neurological is going to see me and make financial arrangements. their epilepsy department has cared for Stephen for years and they're absolutely first rate. My doc is setting up a consult appointment right now. I guess apparently because there'e a spur actually sticking in the nerve rather than just the disc lying against it, time is of the essence or that's what my doc said this am.

I have some people to move my gear this weekend.

@BumbleBeeBoogie,
I am going to inquire about this procedure when I get to UNC. thanks BBB. Is there a particular name or something I can refer to for this treatment?
