150 years ago today their 1st edition came out.
Turns out at first it was only meant for academic types. There were no pictures for awhile.
When they started losing money, they decided to add pictures.
They had 11 pages left over in the next edition, so through some pictures of Tibet in there.
The rest, as they say, is history.
I just called them to find out where the subscription I had renewed was, and so took the opportunity to wish them a happy anniversary.
Many young 'Merican boys saw pictures of nekkid boobies for the first time thanks to National Geographic magazine.
@chai2,
From what I remember, they didn't look like that.
That woman is not at all attactive to me, and age will not be kind to her.

Young George Bailey at the soda counter in Gowers Drug Store
George: Made up your mind yet?
Mary: I'll take chocolate.
George: With coconut?
Marry: I don't like coconut.
George: You don't like coconut? Say, brainless, don't you know where coconuts come from? Look it here...from Tahiti, Fiji Islands, the Coral Sea!
Mary: A new magazine! I never saw it before.
George: Of course you never.Only us explorers can get it. I've been nominated for membership in the National Geographic Society.
@Setanta,
Yeah. Everyone thinks he's super nice but I've got a feeling about him...
