Friends Don’t Let Birds Drink and Fly

Near Sydney, Australia, there are hundreds of parrots who are falling out of trees. In an attempt to jump from one branch to another, they’ll miss, and then fall to the ground. With all coordination gone, they’re rushed to the Animal Hospital where they then hide in the corner under a piece of newspaper.
Sound familiar?
They’re drunk. A veterinary surgeon called Lisa Hansen chalks up all the symptoms to inebriation or drunkenness, and believes the cause lies in something they may have eaten.
It seems like the party in the trees has hit an all time low, as the hospital is caring for about 30 birds at a time, they’ve been receiving up to eight a day.
When they’re cowering in the corner of their cages, they’re essentially riding out the hang over.
And what’s cure for a bird’s hangover? Sweetened porridge and fresh fruit.
Well many birds eat fruit: berries and such. Is it that much of a stretch that a certain amount of birds in the population will inevitably eat rotten or fermented fruit wherever they find it.
