Goodbye, Cathy, and Good Riddance (for Some)
Friday, August 13, 2010
By Joy Y. Wang

Cathy Guisewite announced on Wednesday that she’ll be ending her “Cathy” comic strip on October 3. The creator described her decision to kill off Cathy (the character), who is often pictured pulling her auburn hair out or counting the number of calories in food on her plate, as an “excruciating” one.

@tsarstepan,
Well, if you can't say anything nice, be quiet, osso.

That said, her strip has been popular.

From the time I began reading the newspaper on a daily basis (middle schoolsih) to the time I graduated high school, I read the daily comics and Cathy was one of the usual suspects. But Cathy got pretty old after that as she pretty much recycled the same shtick for the next several decades.

I guess it's too each his or her own.

I often read Cathy, but see her behaviour as odd, or perhaps oddly American?!

I remember reading in the newspaper of the forthcoming beginning of a new comic strip of Cathy,
by a hopeful, optimistic young girl with her new budding career in cartooning.
I was hopeful that her career 'd succeed. I guess I got my wish.
Now we read of its forthcoming end.

I enjoyed her comic strip.
There r a lot of ugly ones out there now.
Cathy was always nice.

@OmSigDAVID,
I may have missed out on her first years of comic singledom and neuroticism and no matter what one thinks of her stereotypical faults, one must stand back and admire her 34 year stretch. What a long a successful career of neurotic moments.

She brought hundreds of thousands of smiles to a few million readers in that stretch. It's time to settle down and retire to whereever comic strip characters retire to. Hope she says hi to Calvin and Hobbes and stays away from that Peanut Gang. They're a bad influence.

@tsarstepan,
Oh yeah. Calvin and Hobbes was the best strip ever.
