Most of us have a flutter of panic when the annual summer holiday looms and we're forced to confront the notion of revealing our excess flab to a packed beach. But it's not just women who are panicking - plenty of men are, too.

My husband Simon was no exception. When I caught him gazing gloomily at himself sideways-on in the wardrobe mirror, he cried: 'I've put so much weight on - there's no way I can go on a beach.'

... and hell is a place of unending torture, so having a husband on a diet is like unending torture.

It is a new matter of interest, possibly of short duration, like a new fad, or hobby.

It is implied that it is not a matter of serious consequence;
perhaps a fairly frivolous or semi-frivolous matter.
