@Dutchy,
Winchester's a lot prettier and more historic. It avoided being bombed during the war. There was a story going around that Hitler planned to have himself crowned king in Winchester cathedral.

Upholland UK.

@izzythepush,
Have been sent many photographs of Winchester's historic buildings with descriptions. Was always going to visit my friend, unfortunately my illness will and has prevented this now.

@Dutchy,
Well here's a few more. This is 'Arthur's' round table in the guildhall. Actually it dates back to Edward III, but was repainted to show the tudor rose during the reign of Henry VII

This is the buttercross.

And of course the cathedral.

Winchester UK, ancient capital of Wessex, and where Henry I was crowned after William Rufus' (William II) 'accident.'

It really is one of the top "plus beaux villages de France". But even one coach-load of tourists is too much ... (fortunately, they've only got a very small car park)

Athlone, Ireland

As a child, my mother always said my room resembled a tumble-down shack in Athlone! I'm not sure how she knew, as she'd never been there, and, when I went there, I didn't see anything that resembled my room Confused

@margo,
And my mother told me her mother's mother (or was it grandmother? I think the mother's mother because it makes sense with some other stuff) was the daughter of the earl of Athlone. There was a story about certain furniture and some aggravating relative getting all the good stuff. One should write these things down as a child..
I have a faint memory that she was disinherited for running away with so and so..

An earnest older cousin pooh poohed this to me as a typical story, which it likely was. She also told me that my nana saw the virgin, who told her while she was very ill that she would live a long life, which she did. Anyway, should I ever get to Ireland, I might drop in to Athlone for amusement. Tell me more, Margo!

The sculpture depicts a scene, which happened (still in my youth) at the annual Gösselmarkt (Goose market) held on the first Thursday in May (with a fun fair in that week ... in front of our house).
