@ehBeth,
It always amazes how much this style resembles parts of Flamenco. Not that I should be surprised - I think the Gypsies came from India via the middle east and in Spain their musical traditions hybridized to form flamenco

See what I mean:

@hingehead,
I always felt the Arabic influence was noticeable; especially in the minor scales that form the basis of the music.

@hingehead,
There is a local early music group here whose concerts I've been attending for decades - The Toronto Consort. One season they prepared a concert program which reflected the music Cervantes would have heard over his life.

First - the music of Spain of the late 16th century
Next - the music he would have heard as a prisoner of war in Algeria
Finally - the music of Spain which had changed while he was in prison - it now held a strong Moorish/North African influence

I'm fascinated by how music changes as it travels. Toronto Consort indulges that part of my brain.

What I was listening to on the local radio station in 1971. Eclectic mix sadly missing from today's radio.

@panzade,
That brings back a few memories - good ones! Surprising how many of the people named are still around.

@vonny,
I'm listening and watching Brief Encounter, an adaptation of a Noel Coward play, made in 1946.
