@farmerman,
She's really quite good; in spite of the people who like her.

@CalamityJane,
You'll appreciate this schatzi.
The original version sung by Kurt Weil who wrote it with Bertolt Brecht

Although he's not a great singer, his voice is so perfect for the song...the way he rolls his rrrr's. The touch of evil in his voice.

Personally, I like Dave's simple uncluttered interpretation also:

@panzade,
The gold standard is Lotte Lenya's version. But I couldn't find it on the 'net.

@panzade,
I know that version, panzade. I don't remember the name of the movie...it was a thriller I believe and they played "Mack the Knife" in German in it.
Gosh...it drives me crazy now, I have to find that movie...

Regardless, I always loved that song!

@Lustig Andrei,

I agree LA and let me ask something. Is this the portal to the musical Cabaret?

All the English versions of Mack never made sense to me.
Does one have to listen to it in the sense of the death throes of the Weimar Republic and the ascendancy of the Nazi party?

Yes, that helps (especially with the German lyrics) but for me, at least, it's not strictly necessary. The music stands up on its own. If you hear in the lyrics, instead, urban angst about the power of the underworld, that works, too.
