@aidan,
Kid Rock is such a weasel. Let me explain; he took 2 popular songs (Werewolves Of London and Sweet Home Alabama)and made them into All Summer Long which was a HUGE hit this summer...and which we have to play almost every night. Evil or Very Mad

@aidan,
Preston is the one that dances like a fool. I love him tho. he is the one on the right and Chris is the one on the left. I don't know Chris as well as Pres.

@emshae,
Emshae - I really, really like them. I've been listening to their stuff since you posted. They're funny and they can harmonize and play the guitar too, so they're right up my alley. I like your friend's dancing. They just look like a couple of guys who know how to have fun and make music. Tell them they have a new fan - thanks to you - I love country music but barely get to hear it over here, so I'd never have heard this if you hadn't posted it.

Panzade - I can't really explain why, but I LOVE that song. I know what you're saying - Kid Rock even looks a little weasely to me- but for some reason, I've always liked his music. He's a character.

The new Flaming Lips. Interesting. It's like they've just forgotten about their last 5 albums or so.

Jason & The Scorchers - Going Nowhere

She blew it all on alcohol
And a bad Missouri boy
Sweet Loretta Farmington
From Cairo, Illinois

Daddy said don't leave us girl
Don't throw your life away
She just smiled so young and wild
And all that she could say, is

I'm going nowhere
I'm going nowhere
I can't see tomorrow
But I'm leaving here today
I'm going nowhere
And at least I know the way

After dark in a trailer park
With the bad Missouri guy
He pumped her full of jimson weed
and blackened up her eye

Morning found him sober
And begging her to stay
But he knew it was over
When all that she would say, is

I'm going nowhere
I'm going nowhere
I can't see tomorrow
But I'm leaving here today
I'm going nowhere
You can bet I know the way

Thumbin' down the highway
With her brand new baby boy
Sweet Loretta Farmington
From K-Mart Illinois

21 and holding
Looking 35
But holding her redemption
Just glad to be alive

Just going nowhere
Just going nowhere
I can't see tomorrow
But I'm holding my today
I'm going nowhere
And at least I know the way

I'm going nowhere
I'm going nowhere
I can't see tomorrow
'Cause I'm holding here today
I'm going nowhere
Thank God I know the way

Please Explain: Indian Classical Music
Friday, January 29, 2010

Hindustani music, a classical musical tradition of northern and central India, can be traced back to Vedic times, around 1000 BC. On today’s edition of Please Explain we’ll take a look at India’s rich culture of music and its trademark instruments. Tabla player Dibyarka Chatterjee, and sitar player K. V. Mahabala join us to talk about the history and traditions of Indian classical music, and to perform.

@tsarstepan,
I'm now listening to Brooklyn Rider and their NPR Tiny Desk Concert:

Their set list:
Vagharshabadi Dance
Second Bounce
Debussy String Quartet in G Minor: 2nd Movement
Ascending Bird

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=122946647
Quote:
January 26, 2010 - It's hard to know what will happen when the string quartet Brooklyn Rider starts playing. Yes, these four guys love to play Debussy and Brahms, but they're just as likely to team up with a singer-songwriter or a Kurdish kamancheh player. Or write their own music.

So we weren't sure what they'd do when they stopped by Bob Boilen's desk to play a Tiny Desk Concert in the NPR Music offices. What we got was a bracing sample of their visceral fire, beginning with a saucy Armenian dance by an orthodox priest named Komitas " one of the pieces they picked up during their travels with Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble.

The next piece is proof that inspiration can come from almost anywhere " even, as Brooklyn Rider violinist Colin Jacobsen sheepishly admits, a "bouncy-ball" with a wildly unpredictable second bounce. He wrote the piece as a companion to music by Debussy. And finally, the piece we were anxiously anticipating: Brooklyn Rider's theme song of sorts, "Ascending Bird." It's Jacobsen's stunning arrangement of a Persian folk song that goes back thousands of years.

@djjd62,
The radio program Sound Opinions on Chicago public radio station WBEZ interviewed Frank in a segment they call Classic Album Dissection. You can listen to it here: http://www.soundopinions.org/ They do a weekly podcast, too. Mostly, it's a pretty good show.

The Breeders video is great. When was that made?

@panzade,
I take Sweet Home Alabama pretty seriously, as it was the obligatory soundtrack to the four years I lived in Tuscaloosa. And I will never dance to an illegitimate version of it.

I've just learned, by the way, that the lyrics are not as straighforward as they seem. For example, after he sings, "In Birmingham they love the Governor," the backup singers are singing, "Boo boo boo," not, "Ooh ooh ooh." Interesting.
