@aidan,
another one of my favorites - I'm thinking of him because my son loves a song by him and it's my little Joe-Joe's birthday tomorrow and I met and shook hands with John Hiatt on my first outing after Joseph's birth...I was out at Penn's Landing in Philadelphia (which is the wonderful city in which my first child was born 'the city of brotherly love') and I was supposed to keep the baby home for six weeks, but I thought, ' Oh hell - John Hiatt is playing and it's been three weeks and it's open air and I've passed on awesome immunities and I'm sure as hell gonna go see THAT and as John passed through the crowd he shook my hand and cooed at Joseph and then years later, one of Joseph's favorite songs was Blue Telescope by John Hiatt ( Joseph has a poet's soul and when he write s- he writes well- I would have posted Blue Telescope - but I couldn't find it on youtube):

I'm listening to "The Leningrad Cowboys", I can't get their CD's in the US so I listen to them on youTube. By the way hingehead, isn't Brendan an unusual name for a lesbian????? I could understand "Brenda" maybe, not that it's a bad thing, just haven't heard of any lesbians named Brendan. I do have to say that I have not met every lesbian yet, so maybe Brendan is used more than I know. Now I am really confused, Ellen DeGeneres doesn't wear overalls....I don't think, ........at least I've never seen any pictures of her like that. I will admit that before I got married, I was know to use a hammer from time to time, actually, I still use the hammer more than Mr. glitterbag, his Dad wasn't handy but my Dad taught me how to re-wire a light switch, use a soldering iron (a skill I have never used other than when he was working on circuit boards and asked me to prove to him I could still do it), change a tire (which I also never do), and a whole bunch of things he thought was important for me to know since I was the oldest and he wanted me to be able to take care of myself. Now that I think about it some more, I've seen my Dad in something close to "overhauls" but I'm pretty sure he wasn't a lesbian.

Is McGarveys Pub still around?

Well, it is still listed as McGarveys Saloon near the docks in downtown, But our beloved restaurants, saloons, pubs and dives are hanging on by a thread, and it's not because people are not going out....it that all these frigging chains have invaded the area. I live 10 minutes away from downtown but now it takes 30 minutes. If you want to go to one of the few original (as in family or non-chain) you need to go on Mon thru Thurs because the tourists are always there on the weekend and in good weather. I'm happy to see the tourists, I like to visit other places myself, but I hate to compete for a seat in a restaurant on weekends or holidays.

I can barely recognize Annapolis, and I live here. Other than the historic areas, the surrounding areas are saturated with all the usual stores and the ever growing Mall monster. The chains have built on almost every square inch of space and now there is so little available parking, they have built a ton of parking garages. Crime has increased because the shoppers are easy pickins. We have Pottery Barms, Crate and Barrel, William Sonoma, I guess we still have a Gap and a baby Gap....I don't like to go to the Mall so things change and I never even notice. Baily Banks and Biddle (upscale jewelry store) hires various homeless men to stand on different places on the main roads and advertise 70% off. I guess if anybody has stock in the company now is the time to dump it.

So many of the great department stores have gone the way of the dinosaur, and the stores that are supposed to be the gold standard of department stores are less than ordinary. You might pay more but you will get the same old tired stuff.

To add insult to injury, McCormick and Schmick (sp) opened up and claimed to be this great seafood oasis......Can you believe it, right here in Maryland where blue crabs and seafood are the State treasures. Some folks say they like it but it's mostly people who have lived far away from the water in other States and they don't know what a Maryland Crab Cake should taste like.

I need to apologize for the rant, I do love it here and I always thought I would want to live here forever, but I miss all the trees and rolling farm land and the quiet roads and the local vegetable stands. At least in my neighborhood we still have a lot of acreage and we are buffered from the growth by 8 acres of land the community owns and cannot sell. So my neighbors are great, we like our home and will probably stay here until they take us out feet first.

After all this groaning and moaning, if you are ever in the area, let me know and we can steer you the the more authentic places. And if we don't have anymore good places, I'll make my grandmothers crabcakes, we can drink some beer and watch the O's hon.

@glitterbag,
I appreciate you taking the time to catch me up on Annapolis. Apos to the music buffs who are posting songs but this will be short.

I lived in Annapolis from '76 to '78 and played at a place called Charlie's West Side 4 times a week. Also did McGarveys and Middletons Tavern on St Pats day which was a wild affair...I tell you what.

The town was so quaint then...I remember walking into an old storefront with guitars displayed and meeting Paul Reed Smith who now is a famous luthier.

I lived up the road in Arnold on the Magothy in a little cottage where we would spread out a newspaper and dig into a bushel of blue crabs and a case of Pabst.

Good times!
