If I bought a DVD from america would it work in my player? I'm from the UK.

In the USA region 1 code is used while in the UK region 2 code is used. There is also an all region DVD. You should confirm which encoding is used.
(There appears to be a region-free DVD player. Try google search with "DVD; region.")

If you are in the UK - you can buy a lot of region free DVD players - amazon.co.uk is one site which sells them.
