Hairdressers? Need advice about my red roots. Help!

I put a semi-permanent chocolate brown tint on my hair yesterday and my roots look really red. I usually use a cool or ash brown but this was not available and because my natural shade has red in it, the roots look especially red. I don't like my hair to have any red at all.

I was going to put an Ash brown (4/1) over the roots today to neutralize the red. Is this the best way and safe?
