I want to use a video sender to send the video and sound from a PC downstairs to my TV upstairs. Do these things really work? Will the signal be able to get through several walls and ceiling? What is a good brand? Thanks!

you are talking wireless? I don't know a thing about that yet.
if your computer has a video out
go buy the correct cable and just run composite
or S-video to your VCR then to your TV - Ebay has great pricing on cable, and you might need to go to radioshack for the adaptor to the soundcard.
Yes, talking wireless. Obviously running wires would be safest with best quality. However my wife would be kind of upset if I ran wires from my computer room downstairs, out the door, through the rec room, out another door, up the stairs, around the corner through the living room, to the TV  . Hence my question regarding video senders.

i would imagine that the quality would be very poor.
another option could be to setup a cheap computer for the tv and possibly network it wirelessly or using a homepna phoneline network.
So you don't believe the hype about products such as these:

They sound good, but I don't want to get a piece of gunk that won't deliver good quality. Anyone have any first hand experience?
