Humans have high functional brains. Why? An answer is that there is evolution by natural selection, and the selection happen because the environment give differential advantage in reproduction for high functioning brains. Why did our ancestor select high functioning brains? According to one theory, our ancestors are social creatures. If we look at social structures of apes, monkeys, and human, you see there is one commonality. The members that are most successful, or most fit to leave progeny are the ones that accumulate the most resources. These people are also the ones with "high social standing". So, what we can deduce? One possible explanation is the following: The monkeys with 'high social standing' in a social community is given a differential advantage in reproduction. Is this an answer to 'why people have high functional brains?'. What is' high functional brains' got to do with 'high social standing'? You can be stupid, and still famous. Just look at the Paris sisters! So, what can we say? Perhaps, the 'high functional brains' is used to acquire ' high social standing', but smart people are not necessary the most popular. Perhaps the high functional brains is a necessary, but not sufficient condition to be in 'high social standing'? By this, i mean, higher brain function allows one to comprehend '
'social relationships', and this give a slighter higher probability of being in a 'high social standing'. So, if someone is ugly, even if he/she is smart, she/she is not going to be popular in whatever social group.
what it takes to be popular?
an ounce of coke will gain you a lot of friends (until it runs out anyway)
