I installed this mod two weeks ago. Still no search listings in Google, but Yahoo and All The Web now contain pages that list topics from my phpBB.

One thing to note is that this mod optimizes the pages and allows spiders in but the ultimate decision on inclusion in an index is based on the algo of the search engine.

This is a search engine feature. Some engines have "clustering" or grouping of results from the same domain. Some allow you to turn it off when you search but none allow you to determine how it will appear for others.

For example, Google clusters, but A9 (a new Amazon engine that uses Google's results) didn't cluster the last time I checked.

I did not realise that a spider could/would use that much transfer, that is frightening. I suppose to put that in perspective for me, your site is very extensive. Never the less a valueable point for me to take on board.

I have several terabytes of bandwidth available so it's not a problem for me, but for smaller sites on shared hosts it can be.

I have several registered member only forums on my phpBB(hidden to the guest) will/ can the spiders see the content and still potentially rank them or will I have to make them open for them for guests in order to do so?

I believe this was answered but to repeat, yes, it needs to be viewable by guests or search engines will not be able to get to the content.

I read that you need to be concentrating on work that you actualy get paid for(I unfortunately know the feeling), as a suggestion seen as this mod of yours must be one of the most potentially beneficial out and then looking at the service you provide.

Do you have a contribution papypal thingy?

I feel that your service is worth a few pounds from folk on a once a year basis at least.

folks would be fortunate to get this service from a webhost they would pay for.

If you have I'll certainly put few euro in there at the end of this month

Thanks, while I do have and use a paypal account frequently I don't want any donations. If people want to do something to thank me they can always put a link to Able2Know.com in their forum footer. ;-)

Just a suggestion - it might help if you commented around the code describing which of the 23 items the particular code is responsible for. That may help those that don't want to implement certain ones.

Initially I'd planned to do this but then decided to make it easymod compliant and to conform to phpbb standards. But they take so long to validate anything that I'll probably not be submitting much to their database.

So in the future I'll comment the code in the mod.

Oh - and are you planning to replicate this for phpBB 2.2 once it's released (please say yes Wink )?

I definitely will. It might take me a bit, because I'd have to unfork my own phpbb code but I will do it.

Incidentally, 2.2 has some bot handling included but it is, IMO, a bad way to do it.

What is the advantage of removing the SID?

It allows search engine spiders to index your pages.

Some spiders will index pages even with a sid in the url but rermoving it usually means they index more.

Re: phpBB Search Engine Optimization - Sessions, static URLs

I would like to use just this part of the MOD not so much for SOE but that is very useful but we have a lot of Blind users who use screen readers So the less links on the page the easily it is for Blind users to navigate to the topics Part 7 would be useful as well but it would be more useful if they were not a link

The down side is we are only using 2 04 and we have made quite a few MODS to make it more user friendly to screen readers and readers with poor site will that part of the MOD work with 2 04

Thanks

Barrie

It should work just fine, the only possible problem is that the 2.0.4 code might be different and you'll have to look for similar things to replace but even that is something I don't think will be an issue.

If you need help with it let me know, but IMO you should work on upgrading the version itself ASAP.

ok. Seems like my web server doesn't support mod_rewrite for security reasons..

It's not really a security issue (except in the most roundabout way).

I say move to a host that allows it, this is easily the most important server feature for SEO.

What can I do to make my phpBB forum more spider friendly then ?

There are many things you can do that are documented in the mod. But without being able to use mod_rewrite you can't take the final step toward html urls.

Why ??

Please see: How to ask questions the smart way.

Because my ESP isn't working well today I need for you to actually include information about your question.

Otherwise the answer is: because.

Ask your host if you have mod_rewrite enabled on your account.

ok. I understood what you have said but i have already paid for my web service for a year :-(
can't back out of it.

Alternatives?

So, without mod_rewrite, I will not have html urls. Without it, my forums are still able to be spidered on. Just that they will still be dynamic pages.
is that right?

yes. mod rewrite is not enabled with my web host.

Other than changing web host, is there any other way about this?

You'll have to troubleshoot this with your host.

Not really. Unless they decide to allow you to use it.

Great PHPbb SEO Mod!
Wow, this mod keeps getting better and better. Thank you for taking the time to put this mod together and for sharing it with us. For everyone else, I know seo and trust me, Craven knows his stuff. This mod is by far the best seo mod for phpbb that I have seen. The only major thing I would change is to make the links to the last posts in the index and viewforum pages have the title of the post instead of the date of the post. Google puts a very high emphasis on the text in the incoming links. A Google search for "click here" (without the "") is a good example of this. the search term "home" is another good example. Thanks!
