It's awkward, but quoted speech is often awkward. People always speak first draft.

Are you having trouble understanding his meaning?

could done as e.g. Iran. That is the way of saying for example which is rather dull for some people so thay use the pharse 'such as say' or 'such as say for example'. As times goes by people shorten the full pharsing such that to new English users it is confusing.
