Just saw this (British) advertisement: Bob Dylan's famous "protest" song as a soundtrack for an "ethical co-op". Check it out & see what you think.

How do you feel about this?: Clever targeting by the ad maker of a particular audience? Kind of outraged? Or: "Ho hum, what does it matter? Bob Dylan (or whom-ever) is old hat now, anyway .. the magic moment (along with the the importance of the song) is gone, anyway." Or: Look what they've done to my (favourite) song", ma. <sob>? Or perhaps you couldn't care less?

Anyway, this made me think about other examples songs which might have once held a strong meaning (for you & me) being "co-opted" (ha!) for such purposes.

Any examples you can think of that you'd care to share here? The good, the bad & the ugly. Any that you think are particularly brilliant? Any that have made you want to kill the advertising company which produced the ad for such sacrilege? Any that have caused you actually feel good & have a bit of a laugh? Etc.

Do share!

@msolga,
Damn. I've tried, with no success, to find the PETA advertisement of Chrissie Hynde /Pretenders singing I'll Stand By You. A very effective & moving ad, I think.

Bob's songs and voice have been in quite a few commercials. I saw him perform Forever Young in one not so many days ago.

@msolga,
One of the most infamous musical annexations was when Ronald Reagen borrowed Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA.

It's far from the jingoistic, patriotic, Nationalistic anthem Reagen tried to turn it into in his political campaign and ads.

@tsarstepan,
not exactly in the spirit of the thread but when Spiro Agnew used Hoyt Axton's "Pusherman" to rail against liberal hippie drug use (totally missing the intent of the song). Weird.

@edgarblythe,
Really, edgar? Surprised

What sort of commercials & which variety/vintage of his songs?

I can't really see anyone using, say, Like a Rolling Stone to much commercial advantage! Wink (Now I'm wondering what it could possibly sell. Razz )

Did any of you check out the co-op ad in my first post?

If so, just curious: what did you think?
Appropriate?

@dyslexia,
God, I wish I could see that one, dys!

And I don't even know the song! (And suspect I should!) Sad

@msolga,
It's eye-rollingly ineffective in its obnoxiousness because of it seems to fit the green ad formula to a T. But then again, with full disclosure, I'm so far from a Bob Dylan fan.

Long commercial... what the heck is it selling again?!

@edgarblythe,
Crikey!

I'm kinda outraged! How DARE Pepsi distort my own personal listening history like that! Wink

And as for Victoria's Secret.... What the ...?

Bob, Bob ... did you have anything to do with the rights to your image & music in that one? Is this ad for real? It seems, well ... rather out of context!

"Ethical banking/co-ops", tsar. Wink

I was a Dylan "fan" a long, long time ago, but I still find the music within the context of these contemporary ads very strange & disconcerting indeed!

I'm hoping for some more up-to-date (music) examples.

And some clever ones! (If they exist.)

@dyslexia,
Ah. Thanks for that, dys.

If I can't find a video, I'll try & track down the lyrics. Then use my imagination! Wink

I've seen two of Donovan's songs used in commercials. Wear Your Love Like Heaven and Catch the Wind, I think.

@edgarblythe,
Shocked

Once again, was that for real?

Gosh I think it was.

Goodness me.

Can we safely deduce that he's just after as many $$$$ as possible at this late stage of the game?

I guess the answer is: So what? What does it matter anyway? And fair enough, I guess ... Neutral
