ellsbury update --

they're saying 4-to-6 weeks recovery time for a "dislocation or subluxation (partial dislocation) of the right shoulder"... Confused

@Region Philbis,
Sometimes the loss of certain players (like Ellsbury) can be very hard to overcome. Pedroia and ellsbury are so key to that offense...it can't be measured in sheer stats. He's such a unique talent - a rally starter with his key hits, not to mention his positive attitude. Crawford, last year's lead-off man, is still on disabled list?

I truly hope his return is shorter than 6 weeks but judging by his agony, it looks like it could be longer. His injury hurts as they need him greatly as a rally starter not to mention his defensive skills. Hey, he was voted second as MVP ...was it last year?

Apparently, according to the 'talking heads', there has been quite a bit of drama (and pissed off conversations) hanging over this team like a cloud since the collapse last year.

@Ragman,

crawdad is still a couple weeks away.
i think he was in town yesterday to get his elbow looked at...

yes, ells came in second to verlander last year.
i think ross makes the most sense in CF right now, with McD in left and sweeney in right...

the latest tidbit the media has been salivating over is tito's refusal to attend the fenway 100 bash next friday.
he basically said it's too soon for him to go back and hug john henry...

@Region Philbis,
Well, we all know Francona is a smart guy and is a real person. You gotta respect him for being real and begging off attending.

OTOH, the sad thing for me as a dislocated fan located in TB-Rays-land is that I can't attend that 100-yr -anniversary bash. Gee, I wonder if I can get Tito's tix?

FIW, my first attendance at Fenway was in 1965-ish. Second time was at World Serious game in 1967 when they played the Cards.

@Ragman,

i didn't make it to the fens until '98...

my go-to was shea stadium.
i must've seen two dozen or so met games in the 70's and 80's -- many of them more than half-empty, due to their prolonged suckage...

@Region Philbis,
I went to Shea twice. I found it be bleak and not a fan-friendly stadium.

@Region Philbis,
I think the game I watched at Shea was the Jets and Pats, circa 1979. Pats lost by a point. We traveled there by bus that weekend as part of a company outing.

I listened to the Sawx-Rays game when it was 6th inning and score was 5-5. The Rays just couldn't get out of that inning. Still early in the year but the whole AL Eastern Div all wants to be locked in at 4-3. Sawx have all that mediocrity to strive towards. They've had on their hitting shows of recent times. Sure hope that their pitching catches fire soon.

@Region Philbis,
you gotta be just a smidge concerned about your pitching, no...?

@Region Philbis,
OMG! Am I out of touch - or what?! For the first I've noticed in the box scores is displayed a pitching stat called a Hold! How dubious is the value of that one! All you need to be is the pitcher who happens to be lucky enough to be pitching at the part of the game while your team hits and stays ahead but not the one that closes the game. It's not really a pitching stat. Am I seeing this correctly?

@Ragman,

yeah, it's one of those extra pitching stats that not every newpaper recognizes (the bahstin globe being one of them)...

@Ragman,
it is worth a point in our league, so let's not be discussing the secrets of it here, eh...?

I don't know that luck has a lot to do with it, though.

they are usually the guy brought in with men on base and the tension running high. a blown save is the penalty for screwing it up...

@Region Philbis,
Gotta love it. Kenmore Square traffic, both car and pedestrian, around 1:30 to 2:30 pm. Oh to be a restauranteur or bartender at that time. It must be like Xmas in July, if they're staffed up for it, that is! Marathon crowd meets Fenway Park masses as they release the throngs!

Melancon took the loss for Boston on Opening Day. Then he blew a save by allowing an 11th-inning walk off home in the third game of the season. He allowed a home run again in the opener of the series against the Tampa Bay Rays. Three appearances, three bad outings. But they were just a preview of his historic meltdown against the Rangers.
In the eighth inning, he faced six batters. All of them scored. He allowed three home runs. He recorded no outs. His ERA for the year is fractionally less than 50.00.

My kids played tee-ball for three years. The tee had a better ERA than that.

@Ragman,

... how did he manage to earn 20 saves for the worst team in all of baseball last year?
