@panzade,
They integrated with a dude named Pumpsey Green. So, of course, being spoonerism-lovin' folk, we refer to him as Grumpsey Peen, a name that had us laughing quite a bit last night.

@Ragman,

thumbs down...

Bailey needs surgery on his thumb

The Red Sox took a gamble when they acquired Andrew Bailey from the Oakland Athletics in December.
The righthander unquestionably had the talent and temperament to replace Jonathan Papelbon as the
closer, but had a troubling history with injuries.

Now, just days before the season starts, Bailey has been told he needs surgery on his right thumb,
according to major league sources.

Bailey was examined by team doctors in Boston on Monday and on Tuesday will see Dr. Robert Graham,
a hand specialist at the Cleveland Clinic. If Graham agrees with the recommendation for surgery, it could
happen later that day.

Graham performed surgery on Kevin Youkilis and Jarrod Saltalamacchia in 2010. Youkilis had a torn
muscle in his right thumb and Saltalamacchia a torn ligament in his left thumb.

The Red Sox open the season on Thursday in Detroit. It is uncertain how long Bailey would be out.

“When a player is injured I always am very concerned and always try to make alternative plans. If he jumps
right back in, then I’m pleasantly surprised,’’ manager Bobby Valentine said. “When guys are hurt, they’re
hurt and he couldn’t pitch for a couple of days, you know?’’

It is uncertain how Bailey was injured. All that is known is that he threw 26 pitches in a minor league game
last Wednesday and has not pitched since.

Because of the long layoff, it is almost certain Bailey will start the season on the disabled list for the second
consecutive season, whether surgery is required or not.

Andrew Bailey headed to surgery

Boston Red Sox closer Andrew Bailey will have surgery on his right thumb on Wednesday
to reconstruct the ulnar collateral ligament, the team said Tuesday.

Although the Red Sox have not placed a timetable on Bailey's return, manager Bobby Valentine
said he was told by the training staff that Bailey should not be expected to return before the
All-Star break.

Bailey was examined Monday in Boston and Tuesday in Cleveland. The surgery is scheduled to be
performed by Dr. Thomas Graham in Cleveland, the Red Sox said in a statement.

The UCL is located at the base of the thumb.

"We won't use him until he is fully recuperated. Guys we have set up in the bullpen will hold down
the fort," Valentine said.

Valentine isn't sure how Bailey was injured. The manager initially said it began bothering the closer
during a game against Pittsburgh on March 21, but Valentine wasn't aware of it until Friday.

"When I talked to him before he left, he was unknowing," Valentine said. "He felt a little something.
There really wasn't a defining moment, in the last conversation I had with him."

Valentine did not name a new closer, but he said that Mark Melancon is among those who will get
the chance to close games out.

"It is unfortunate Bailey is out," Melancon said. "I just heard the news. We have a good bullpen. We
will be all right. We are going to figure it out. I am ready (to pitch the ninth if need be)."

Melancon, who pitched in nine games this spring, posting an 0-1 record with a 5.59 ERA, and had
20 saves last season with Houston, said he had not been told by Valentine that he would be the
closer.

Another candidate for the job would seem to be Alfredo Aceves. Aceves, who also said he was
unaware of Valetine's plans for replacing Bailey, appeared in six Grapefruit League games, going
1-1 with three saves and a 5.21 ERA. He has four career saves over four major league seasons.

Daniel Bard, who was moved to the rotation, has been mentioned as a candidate to go back to
the bullpen, but Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington shot that down earlier Tuesday.

"(Bard) is going to pitch Game 5 in Toronto and we're committed to him as a starter right now,"
Cherington said, according to NESN.

@Joe Nation,
Great game. Sox were just trailing Tigers in Comerica Park in 8th 2 - 1. Most of the game had been scoreless until bottom of 7th with 2 out. Sox just tied it up with a man on 2nd. Interesting thing is the TV color commentary is being provided by former coach Francona.

@Joe Nation,
I'd be happy with the hitting they currently have. I think that it'll end up being spotty. Their relieving will give us fannies more grey hair.

Arrrgh...more spin control from Bobby V. (no surprise):
New Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine was left having to defend how he used the bullpen.

“We had an elusive couple of outs there,’’ he said."

Translation: "We got releivers who can't get a key out to win a game!"

Be aware that the hitters that were needed to get outs on were not big hitters by any stretch of thr imagination. Aceves was, to say the least, not impressive
giving up the winning run to Jackson, a below-avg-to-mediocre hitter at best.

Oh and Pap had perfect innings to get the save for the Phillies. Why can't the Sawx get pitchers like that?
