How to secure the top of an aluminum double-hung window?

Our new apartment has double-hung windows, aluminum framed. There are security bars across the bottoms, but the windows are quite low and the tops, of course, can be slid down when the bottom is open. Is there any way to secure the top half of the window even when the bottom half is open?

@jennem,
We had these little bolt deals. I hope I can describe them right....

They fit in the track of the window and could be set at whatever height you wanted them. There was a little thumbscrew you tightened that set them firmly in place so the window couldn't be lowered any further than where you had placed the gadget.

I have no idea what they were called. Sorry.

I hope it helps anyway!
