Civil war general and president Ulysses S Grant was reportedly baptised Herbert Ulysses Grant but when as a young man he was readying to go to West Point he was mortified that his steamer trunk, which had been mongrammed with his initials said: H.U.G.
According to the story, he decided then and there to drop Herbert, make Ulysses his first name, and adopt Simpson (his mother's maiden name I think) as his middle name.
