I hate petunias.

Petunias and I have a history.

Anyone who thinks tough men and flowers don't go together needs to read Flower Confidential: The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful in the Business of Flowers by Amy Stewart. It's a good reporting job on the cut flower industry and the people who are obsessed with the product.

@dyslexia,
I never gave it a thought, but T likes some fresh-cut flowers in the house and I've grown to like it, too.

I don't get flowers. I mean, I just don't understand them.

If you want to give me a gift, give me something that is intellectually stimulating, or useful in some way or at least something that is fun and will amuse me for a while. Dead plants, no matter how fleetingly colorful, just don't do anything for me.

This has nothing to do with my sense of manliness. I wouldn't feel offended if someone got me flowers. And I certainly respect other peoples appreciation for the things.

I just don't feel they have any point.

Maybe being pretty is point enough.
Not for you.
But for some.

@George,
So, George, all that other stuff I do is unnecessary?

@George,
It was (an attempt at) a joke George... you told me being pretty was enough.

@dyslexia,
I adore the fact that the Lady tells you you're not the boss of her, too cute. At the same time, DI, TAKE YOUR MEDS! There now, not coming from you ... maybe she'll listen.

As for the flower, like the idea of you surrounded by pretty things.

Just because we're men doesn't mean we're dead. If we can't appreciate beauty we might as well be dead. I remember reading about the Japanese samurai having haiku writing contests.

@George,
That doesn't explain the killing them and charging a whole bunch for a dead one thing though.

I'll take any live plant over a dead flower any day.

@Robert Gentel,
The flowers are going to die in any case. There is a short period in most plants lives when they are in bloom. The flowers aren't going to hang around because they aren't cut. A good gardener is going to dead-head to promote new growth.

While I prefer the flowers outside <ahchoo>, I do understand why people like having cut flowers inside as well.
