I have to write a analysis essay about any poem of my choice. I chose "Alone" by Poe. The requirement for this essay is an analysis of the literary devices that aid in the establishment of tone/theme.
i need 3 examples of 3 different literary devices and/or poetic devices.
also a strong thesis that is emphasized by the literary/poetic devices.
This is the poem
From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.
Then- in my childhood, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life- was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold,
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.
Imagery is one i found-poe's diction
@merlyn,
If we give you answers , many of us feel that you wont learn anything. Heres a suggestion, why not google a literary devices list (techniques, devvices, elements etc) and see which ones you can spot on your own.
Imagery is always a good one with Poe, hes accomodating on that technique.
@merlyn,
Imagery is a good one. Another good one is alteration, which Poe was fond of and that you'll find at least two examples of in this poem.
@Robert Gentel,
I think you meant "alliteration", Robert. Ain't much to be altered in Poe's work.
Rhyme. Anaphora.
I ain't writin' your thesis.
@Merry Andrew,
Yes, but I must have misspelled it and the spell-check mangled it. Thanks for catching that as the OP might not have known what I meant.
@merlyn,
well there is alliteration-but i don't think that would work fo this essay
@Gargamel,
i didn't ask for a thesis just mentioned the requirements
@farmerman,
so far what i have is:
Imagery: vivid picture s of Poe's poem especially in lines 17-22
Diction: it gives the overall poem a negative feeling
im not exactly sure what i can use for the third, i don't think alliteration would work
@farmerman,
this poem is a bit ironic that Poe can only see the darkness in the good - anything i can use with that
