and this one is meaningful to me since I was leaving my husband around that time:

My daughter would play Whitney Houston/Michael Jackson and I would play Queen and Dire Straits... we'd just dance around the house. She was 7 Smile and I was in my mid-twenties. Such fun and good memories.

Freddy Mercury was the best.
No comparison.

I'd never seen that "I've got to break free video", it was great!

@Joe Nation,
It was a great time for me, JoeN... I wasn't in love with anyone else, just glad to be breaking free of a very constricting force. I think I floated on a cloud for 3 yrs. I revelled in my kids' humour and exuberance and being able to do whatever I wanted without being criticized or stifled. So that Queen song fit me to a T. In fact, I fell in love with all kinds of music all over again. I feel like that again now - yay. But he was a most magnetic and charismatic singer/person - what I would give to own one of his paintings. His death really is our loss. I wish I'd known him.

Pink's version is very good. (By that I mean it very closely mimics the original which is pretty much perfect.) Unfortunately for all of us, there could only be one Freddie Mercury. I miss him, too.

I went through a year or two just like you described, Mame. I remember driving through the city all by myself with the windows rolled down, singing along with the radio at the top of my voice. Even going to the grocery store was a thrill, because I only had to buy what I felt like buying. Totally manic, just beside myself every day with the joy of being freed from an emotional prison.

There is a famous quote by John Kenneth Galbraith that says, "The happiest time in any man's life is just after the first divorce." I think it applies more to women than men.

@Eva,
Love your last paragraph, eva - doesn't that say it all?

I remember driving with my sister with the windows down and "Elvira" blasting on the tape deck and howling "Oooh wah wah moau moau" out the window ... Fun, fun days Smile (actually, we still do that! ha ha)
