I once asked you Aussies about "shrimp on the barbie" and got a rather uppity response.

Of course you did!!!

We DO NOT HAVE "SHRIMP"...we have prawns.

Hogan spoke USian on that ad.

While being an Uncle Tom.

It made sense re the market, but we still see an Uncle Tom figure, pretending to be an epitome of Australian-ness, but being an American stereotype of what it is to be Australian.

Uncle Tom.

It made sense for the ad to pretend to be what Americans believed us to be, but to see Paul Hogan, a slashing and brilliant satirist, do that ad, was distressing.

It made financial sense, but it still rankled.

Did you use "uppity" as a conscious satire, or was that another unconscious insult that got past the keeper?

Damned interesting word to use in this context, don't you think?

Imagine if an Australian, innocent of the US specific context, used that word on Youtube?

Do you really feel that racial or cultural sensitivity is depriving you of something?

Of course not. Racial sensitivity is great, where it pertains.

This is wilfully obtuse.

I say US crap because this is US racism baggage.

Racism is crap.

Racial baggage projected onto a place where the baggage is different, and ignorantly condemned, is crap.

@msolga,
I wish that the person who gave my last post a thumbs down had actually offered an alternative perspective to what I said. But there ya go.

@Robert Gentel,
I've seen a number of weird disconnects. It depends on your perspective, I guess.

One video response which i think is worth watching as it disects the original ad in a completely different manner.
This video contains Strong Profanity

@patiodog,
It's important to us because we resent the US being a cultural bully.

How is pulling this ad in any way the US asserting anything on Australia?

It isn't. The assertions of racism were made. The response was to pull and apologize.

Pulling the ad was the right thing to do, and it has nothing to do with putting the Aussies down or asserting American culture on others.

Pulling the ad was the wrong thing to do morally (no-brainer financially). It should have been defended and explained. I'm sure it was fiercely defended by the Aus branch of the company and it's ad agency, but we'll never hear a word about that!

Actually, it WAS defended. KFC pointed out that it was not racist in its context.

No, you're right. In fact, it's going to be so hard for KFC to produce an appropriate ad for the West Indies cricket tour, that it's probably best they withdraw their sponsorship completely.

In fact, it's probably safest for them not to sponsor any sport that includes black people from now on. Because that might look racist.

Only if they show them as non-white on TV...and that gets to be seen by someone from the USA.

@dadpad,
Those guys are pretty damn ignorant in their Australian condemnation. But you do realize that this isn't even mainstream US culture right? These guys are essentially just popular YouTubers and they are on an extreme end of the ideological spectrum.

@msolga,
Maybe the biggest cultural difference is how unsurprising we find it. In the US it's so common that there's even a popular commercial series that satirizes it:

@dadpad,
OMG, I just watched this.
Seriously, is this what commonly passes for "commentary" on run of the mill US television?
It is completely ignorant. It's stupid.
Now I'd better get outa here, because I could get seriously angry. And I'm not in the mood for wasting energy getting angry about ignorance & stupidity. Total waste of time. Neutral

No, they are YouTube celebrities and I don't believe they are even on TV at all. This is the level of commentary on a site that lets anyone upload a video.

@Robert Gentel,
However, a bit more "cultural sensitivity" & a bit more more understanding of an entirely different culture to the US would be most appreciated.

I simply can't believe this "debate" has gone on for so long.

@dadpad,
People are prone to get somewhat excited in expressing their views when they feel out-numbered, misunderstood & under siege, dp. Wink

That's just the way it goes.
