@dyslexia,
I have never been willing to put whiskey in eggnog, it seemed like a crime to ruin good whiskey that way...plus my people come from Michigan and Wisconsin, we use brandy mostly. But I tried it this year. Not bad. I might be doing it again.
@dyslexia,
Wonder why they taste so different?
Mind you, bourbon is not my thing either.
@dlowan,
I certainly don't know, but I understand Kentucky bourbon is quite distinct from Tennessee bourbon.
@roger,

I am so going to try Rye in eggnog next.

Different types of barrels to age the whiskey in (each type giving off their own distinct patina), grains vary from country to country obviously vary in flavor, and magic spells and/or curses placed on the product after it has been bottled and boxed and ready to be shipped around the world.
@tsarstepan,
Curses?
Best whisky I ever tasted comes from this little Scottish town...Oban.
Mmmmmmmmmm....
We stayed there for a few days.

We don't drink egg nog, we drink Moose Milk. No Salmonella for us..
This is a variation on the recipe.
1.14 liter dark rum
1.14 liter Kahlua
1.14 liter rye (preferably not CC.)
4 liters of vanilla ice cream, softened
4 liters of partly skimmed milk (have to be health conscience)
nutmeg to taste
I gave up drinking rye. It turns one into a raving, fighting lunatic. But if I did, with all due respect, it's generally seagram's or gibson's finest, which is entirely drinkable, can't stand burbon, yuck or raw lumpy eggs.
@Ceili,
Um... what the heck is partly skimmed milk? Skim milk in the US is fat free? Is this some kind of unscientific way of saying 1% or 2% milk?
And that's a lot of nog! Sounds delicious indeed!
@dlowan,
That's my all time favorite too, d.
NOT CHEAP!!! I used to buy it for around $28/bottle. It's up into the $60s and higher now. It's good, but not worth that price.
@dlowan,
Ya know ... the drinker of such jinxed whiskey is susceptible to the unintentional time travel. For instance: one drinker after drinking his fifth or sixth spiked egg nog at 1:00 AM at night at the local pub then finds himself inexplicably lying in his tub at home and it's 11:00 AM in the morning.
That kind of inexplicable and evil voodoo.
Quote:Modern Version of George Washington's Egg Nog Recipe
http://www.cdkitchen.com/
Serves/Makes: 6 quarts
Ready in: > 5 hrs
* 2 cups brandy
* 1 cup rye whiskey
* 1 cup dark Jamaica rum
* 1/2 cup cream sherry
* 8 extra large eggs
* OR
* 10 large eggs
* 3/4 cup sugar
* 1 quart milk
* 1 quart heavy cream
* 1 teaspoon fresh ground nutmeg
* 1 cinnamon stick
I am skeptical, not only do I try to avoid mixing alcohols to avoid hangovers, but 4 kinds plus sugar sounds like a recipe for disaster.
@hawkeye10,
Yowza.
Sounds like the recipe should begin:
take any four bottles from the liquor cabinet . . .
I always spike my eggnog with rum. Mediocre rum.
It's eggnog, for pity sakes.
@George,
Tsk tsk tsk!
Why do you hate on eggnog so much??
Eggnog deserves as much love as possible!
@tsarstepan,
Au contraire, mon frere!
I like eggnog. And I like rum. And I like rum in eggnog.
But I don't put my good stuff in eggnog.
I sip my good stuff straight.
@George,
Power of suggestion.
Just poured a shot of Gosling's.
@JPB,
I concur with the fans of Oban. Been years since I've had any of it, though.
Not for spiking, egads.
@ossobuco,

I found it only last year, sitting in a Portland hotel bar surrounded by 30+ different Scotches. One of the Obans was far and way my fav of the 7 I tried.
I don't spike my egg nog, actually it's not even EGG nog, but I like's it....
These are both VERY good.

There's no such thing as Tennessee bourbon. All bourbon comes from Kentucky.
